Spain, Autumn
A curated packing list for your trip between Madrid tapas, Barcelona modernisme, and the slow heat of Andalusia. Built for warm autumn afternoons, late dinners, and the pace of a country that takes its evenings seriously.
Border & arrival
What customs and immigration expect.
On the ground
How life actually works once you arrive.
Schengen visa-free, ETIAS launches Q4 2026
US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and most EU citizens enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS authorization (€20 fee, valid 3 years, free for under-18 and over-70) launches Q4 2026 with a 6-month transitional period. Passport must be valid 3+ months beyond your departure.
Alhambra books up to a year in advance
Tickets sell up to 365 days ahead at tickets.alhambra-patronato.es. In high season (Apr-Oct) the Nasrid Palace timed slots routinely sell out 30-60 days before; in autumn 20-30 days. The General/Combo tickets are required for the palaces themselves. Set a calendar reminder.
AVE high-speed rail beats every flight
Madrid-Barcelona on the AVE is 2h 30min city center to city center, faster than flying once you account for security. Madrid-Seville is 2h 30min, Madrid-Granada 3h 30min. Book on Renfe.com or Trainline 1-2 months ahead for the best fares (€20-50 vs €100+ at the station).
Tipping is light, lunch is the main meal
Round up the bar bill or leave a euro on the table. 5-10% at nicer restaurants if service was special. The big meal is lunch (1:30-3:30pm); dinner runs 9-11pm. Many restaurants close 4-8pm. Plan around it, do not fight it.
Siesta is real outside major cities
In Madrid and Barcelona most shops stay open through the afternoon. In Andalusian towns and small cities, expect a 2-5pm shutdown. Use the time for a long lunch or a museum, not a souvenir run.
Type C and F plugs at 230V
Standard European outlets, same as France, Germany, Italy. UK and US travelers need an adapter; check voltage on hair tools (most are not dual-voltage). Phone, laptop, and camera chargers handle 230V automatically.

Clothing
Lightweight for warm afternoons, one layer for cool evenings. Spaniards dress smart-casual; pack accordingly.
Shoes
Cobblestone old towns, marble museums, long city walks. Real walking shoes save the trip.
Toiletries & Personal Care
Spanish farmacias (pharmacies, green cross) are excellent. Pack travel sizes, restock as needed.
Health & Medications
A small kit handles tapas-tour stomach surprises and heat-related issues.
Documents & Money
Cards work nearly everywhere. Cash for tips, tapas-bar bills, and small markets.
Tech & Electronics
Type C and F plugs. Standard EU adapter handles every situation.
Luggage & Organization
Old-town cobblestones defeat suitcase wheels. Soft-sided bags travel better on AVE racks.
Comfort & In-Transit
Long flights, beautiful AVE rides. Plan to arrive in city centers refreshed.
Weather & Climate Gear
Bright autumn sun in Andalusia, brief showers possible by mid-October. Cool dry evenings everywhere.
Cultural & Activity-Specific
Cathedrals, flamenco nights, and the long late dinner each have their own dress code.
Safety & Precautions
Spain is broadly safe; pickpockets work Madrid Sol, Barcelona Las Ramblas, and the Metro at peak hours.
