Iceland, Winter
A curated packing list for your trip on the Ring Road in winter, from Reykjavik through the South Coast, Diamond Beach, and the long quiet of the Eastfjords. Built for sub-freezing wind, four hours of daylight, and the chance of aurora when the sky clears.
Border & arrival
What customs and immigration expect.
On the ground
How life actually works once you arrive.
Schengen visa-free, ETIAS launches Q4 2026
US, Canadian, Australian, and most EU citizens enter visa-free for up to 90 days. ETIAS travel authorization launches in Q4 2026 and applies to Iceland (EFTA member). UK travelers also need to consider their UK ETA when transiting; check official sources before booking.
Cards work everywhere, cash is rarely needed
Iceland is one of the most cashless societies on earth. Cards are accepted at gas stations, public toilets, kiosks, even some food trucks. Skip the airport currency exchange.
Tipping is not customary
Service is included. A round-up at a restaurant is appreciated but never expected. Do not feel obligated.
Daylight is precious in winter
December gives you about four hours of usable light, January and February stretch to six or seven. Plan driving and outdoor activities around the window.
Wind is the danger, not cold
Air temperature is mild for the latitude, but Atlantic gusts of 30 to 60 km/h are routine and can hit 100+ in storms. A real wind shell is non-negotiable.
Off-road driving is illegal
Stay on marked roads. Fines start around ISK 100,000 and rise quickly with damage; severe cases have exceeded ISK 1,400,000 (about $12,000 USD). Rental insurance excludes off-road use, and the damage to fragile lava and moss takes decades to heal.

Clothing
Three-layer system: base, mid, shell. Wool or synthetic only, never cotton. Cotton kills in this climate.
Shoes
Waterproof and grippy. You will walk on ice, wet rock, black sand, and slush in the same day.
Toiletries & Personal Care
Iceland water is excellent. Shampoo it. Drink it. Skip bottled water entirely.
Health & Medications
Pharmacies (apótek) are excellent in cities, sparse outside. Bring what you need.
Documents & Money
Cards run the country. You may not touch krona at all.
Tech & Electronics
Type C and F plugs at 230V (European standard). US devices need adapter; check voltage on hair tools.
Luggage & Organization
A duffel beats a hard suitcase for car-based travel; lift it in and out of trunks.
Comfort & In-Transit
Long flight, then potentially long drives. The carry-on does the heavy lifting.
Weather & Climate Gear
This is the category that earns its weight. Wind shell + warm hat are non-negotiable.
Cultural & Activity-Specific
Geothermal pools are central to Icelandic life. Pool etiquette is strict, follow it.
Safety & Precautions
Crime is virtually nonexistent. Weather is the real threat.
