On the ground

How life actually works once you arrive.

NZeTA + IVL required

US, UK, EU, Canadian, Japanese, and most visa-waiver passports apply via the official NZeTA app (NZD $17) or website (NZD $23), plus the mandatory IVL conservation levy (NZD $35). Approved usually within minutes; valid 2 years. UK citizens get 6 months per visit; most others 90 days.

Severe UV under the southern ozone

New Zealand sits under the seasonal ozone hole, plus high latitude with clear skies in summer. UV regularly hits 12+ (extreme). SPF 50+, UPF clothing, wide-brim hat, polarized sunglasses. The "Slip, Slop, Slap, Wrap" rule is national doctrine.

Cards everywhere, contactless universal

NZD is local. Tap-to-pay (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay) works on every transit, café, food truck. ATMs at any bank. Carry NZD $50-100 cash for the rare cash-only spot or roadside fruit stand.

Tipping is light, often unnecessary

Service workers earn a real minimum wage (NZD $23+/hour); tipping is genuinely optional and not expected. 10% at upscale dinners is generous. Round up taxis. No tipping at cafés, fast food, bars, or supermarkets. Saying "thanks mate" is the cultural equivalent.

Biosecurity is strict

Declare any food, plant, or outdoor gear (hiking boots, tent, fishing equipment) at customs. Failure to declare carries an instant NZD $400 fine. Outdoor gear must be clean of soil and seeds; some incoming items get inspected. The dog at Auckland airport is sniffing for fruit.

Type I plug at 230V

Same as Australia, Argentina, Fiji. US, UK, EU travelers need an adapter. Most modern phone, laptop, camera chargers handle 230V; check single-voltage hair tools.
